This Federal Aviation Administration Skywatch Incident Report, filed under the primary code Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon, records a February 3, 2023 sighting reported through Kansas City Center (ZKC). The crew of American Airlines flight AAL1743, an A319 flying from Cedar Rapids to Dallas-Fort Worth, reported a large balloon off the right side while northbound at FL340, 13 nautical miles west of STJ. The pilot said the balloon, at about FL500 or higher, dropped 20,000 feet in altitude. The report is marked closed.
