· 95 pages · text by OCR

This 1970 USAF Office of Information file from the 21st Air Division at Hancock Field, Syracuse, collects community relations correspondence. It includes Enrico Grimaldi's report of faint star-like objects seen over Commack, Long Island on November 21, 1970, and Major Francis C. Moriarty's reply. The reply notes that Project Blue Book ended December 17, 1969, so the Air Force would not investigate. The file also holds a draft article on NORAD and SAGE, survey requests, thank-you letters and press tour messages.

Mr Richard K Warren Editor and Publisher Bangor News

8 SEP 1970

Dear Mr Warren

Providing proper protection for the nation against a surprise air attack on the United States is the responsibility of the Aerospace Defense Command (ADC). Our ability to carry out this responsibility should be of concern to most Americans.

Throughout the United States, ADC units share in providing air defense for our nation. ADC's aircrews and aircraft have been on continuous alert for the past twenty years to counter the threat of an attack by Soviet intercontinental bombers. In your area, Bangor International Airport is the operating location of ADC's Detachment One, 60th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, which flies the supersonic F-101.

Heart and pulse of the aerospace defenses of the continent are located at the joint U.S.-Canadian North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) Combat Operations Center inside Cheyenne Mountain, near Colorado Springs. A visit to Colorado Springs is an opportunity for you to gather some meaningful and interesting stories for your readers. While here, you will be given extensive briefings on the Aerospace Defense Command's role in national security.

Please suggest a date for your visit via the enclosed envelope so we can arrange the necessary details. You may also call Area Code 303, 635-8911, extension 7343.

Also enclosed is a brochure highlighting the activities of aerospace defense, which may help you with some ideas for story possibilities. If you indicate your editorial needs, we will be happy to prepare an article for you.

Sincerely

Signed by

JESSE J. FORD, JR., Captain, USAF Chief, Public Information Division Directorate of Information
