This release contains White House Exchange Mail records dated January 1998 to October 1999. Most of it is a transcript of a January 29, 1998 press briefing by Press Secretary Mike McCurry covering Iraq, Iran, the budget and the Lewinsky inquiry, plus a 1998 presidential speech. An October 19, 1999 email among Transnational Threats staff forwards a Florida Today article on how scientists expect alien contact would spark a media frenzy rather than a cover-up, describing the 1989 SETI detection protocol.

MCCURRY: I have not heard of any request from the independent counsel that MR. MCCURRY: I'm not an expert on that and I think they are in the b< position to address that. MR. MCCURRY: Apparently, someone in the White House did anonymously answer the question. But I'm not in a position to do it and I will tell you, I do not kr the answer. 34EDAB55.FIN deferred to the judgment of those who are professionally responsible foi protecting the President when they look at the technical and specific questions related to what kind of security they provide and what kind of environm they need to provide the most effective security.
