This Gerald R. Ford Library folder of Ford Congressional Papers holds material from Ford's broadcasts in 1965 and 1966. It contains correspondence with WJR station manager James H. Quello and drafts of Ford's June 1965 "Your Government" radio report on congressional imbalance, Vietnam and Cuba, along with budget remarks. It also includes Ford's March 25, 1966 on-air statement calling for a congressional investigation of UFO sightings near Ann Arbor, Michigan, a Great Society documentary script and a Meet the Press transcript with Indira Gandhi.

A few minutes ago I compared the 89th Congress with two football teams. It seems to me that like the game I described involving the Wolverines of Ann Arbor and the Gophers of Minnesota, the score Congress has made this year so far would be somewhat different if the balance of strength between the Republican and Democrat sides had been more even. This is something I've been telling audiences many places in our Nation, speaking as Minority Leader of the House. Naturally, when I speak at a Republican meeting, I talk about ways to strengthen our membership in the House and elsewhere in government. I won't bore the Democrats who are listening to this WJR broadcast with such information. However, I think all Americans should be concerned with two major dangers that threaten the foundations of our Democracy. Speaking in a non-partisan way, I believe the dangers are the present imbalance of power in the legislative, executive and judicial branches----and the possibility that our strong two-party system could become a thing of the pa When either political party controls Congress by a crushing majority, the traditional system of checks and balances, which is designed to protect the public interest, is endangered. The present Congress is a good example of imbalance, with the same party that has an overwhelming majority in the House and Senate controlling the White House.
