This file from the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library holds press releases and statements that House Republican Leader Gerald R. Ford issued between January and April 1966. Most cover Vietnam policy, the war on poverty, inflation, foreign aid, the federal budget and changes in his press staff. An April 21, 1966 statement says the Air Force told Ford it would contract a university with no close Air Force ties to have scientists study unexplained UFO sightings and make the report public. According to Ford, his call for congressional hearings led to this study.

FORD HOUSE REPUBLICAN LEADER FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NEWS RELEASE Because the Johnson-Humphrey Administration refuses to face up to the serious problems of inflation and~uses to do any- thing about the increase in the cost of living, President Johnson undoubtedly will ask Congress to increase Federal taxes. Republicans strongly believe it would be better to reduce ~ non-military Federal spending ~ thanl\increase Federal taxes. If the President would cooperate with Republicans in reducing the cost of the Federal government we could avoid another tax increase. Regrettably I see no evidence that the Johnson-Humphrey Administration will economize -- which means new tax increases from the White House. II
