This file from the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library holds press releases and statements that House Republican Leader Gerald R. Ford issued between January and April 1966. Most cover Vietnam policy, the war on poverty, inflation, foreign aid, the federal budget and changes in his press staff. An April 21, 1966 statement says the Air Force told Ford it would contract a university with no close Air Force ties to have scientists study unexplained UFO sightings and make the report public. According to Ford, his call for congressional hearings led to this study.

-2- AUTO SAFETY STATEMENT Their study, believed to be the most extensive of its kind ever made, indicated that 71 of the 177 persons killed in the Ann Arbor area auto acci~~u~~had they boon wearing seat belts--that's nearly ... a nc otthose who died. The study also showed that an additional 35 of the victims would have survived had they been wearing shoulder harnesses as well as seat belts. The additional 35 brings to 106 the number of persons among the 177 victims who would have lived had both seat belts and shoulder harnesses been used. It is difficult, of course, to get people to wear shoulder harnesses. They are extremely uncomfortable. And you and I also know that many people driving cars equipped with seat belts use them maybe half the time. It's easy to point the finger at the auto manufacturers. It's about time we also pointed a finger at ourselves. There should be a three-pronged attack on the highway safety problem-- by government, by industry, and by the driver . # 11 # ..
