This file from the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library holds press releases and statements that House Republican Leader Gerald R. Ford issued between January and April 1966. Most cover Vietnam policy, the war on poverty, inflation, foreign aid, the federal budget and changes in his press staff. An April 21, 1966 statement says the Air Force told Ford it would contract a university with no close Air Force ties to have scientists study unexplained UFO sightings and make the report public. According to Ford, his call for congressional hearings led to this study.
CONGRESSMAN GERALD R. FORD HOUSE REPUBLICAN LEADER NEWS RELEASE Monday, March 21, 1966 FOR P.M. RZLEASZ STATEMENT BY ROUSE MINORITY LEADER GERALD R. FORD, R-MICH. It's an insult to the intelligence of the P~erican people for Democratic leaders to contend the Republican Party and the press have kidded the public into thinking inflation is here. The people know that certain prices have been going up steadily and that all the nibbles at the family paycheck have added up to a great big bite. That's why it's ridiculous for any Democrat in Congress to remark casually that price increases since the 1957-59 period have been gradual and to dismiss last month's recordjump for a February in the wholesale price index. In February the wholesale price index registered the sharpest rise for that month since 1951. That is a real danger signal, and no Democrat in Congress can ignore it. President Johnson recently stated candidly that inflation is "perhaps our most serious economic challenge in 1966." If Mr. Johnson is aware of that--just as we Republicans are and have been for some time--I'm sur- prised other Democratic leaders ara not. Some Democrats in Congress apparently are not as interested in polls as is Mr. Johnsou. They seem not to have seen the latest Gallup Poll results on inflation's impact on the family. That poll showed Americans believe a family of four needs $18 more a we2k just to get along this year, as compared llfith a year ago.
