This file from the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library holds press releases and statements that House Republican Leader Gerald R. Ford issued between January and April 1966. Most cover Vietnam policy, the war on poverty, inflation, foreign aid, the federal budget and changes in his press staff. An April 21, 1966 statement says the Air Force told Ford it would contract a university with no close Air Force ties to have scientists study unexplained UFO sightings and make the report public. According to Ford, his call for congressional hearings led to this study.

FORD,··~llHH~.&a "It would be a shame if the presidential presence on television is blacked out because the White House insists on using Signal Corps' technicians instead of network union engineers to handle pickups of Mr. Johnson's TV and radio broadcasts, GI's are great fellows,but I don't think men in uniform should be doing jobs that can and should be handled by civilians--and I believe they feel the same way about it. I'm surprised that the President does not have more concern that the contract between the NBC and ABC networks and the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (AFL-CIO) should be honored. The union points out that presidential use of Signal Corpsmen to handle broadcast pickups violates a network-union contract pro- vision requiring that the union's members handle all technical work at the "point of origination," Harry G. Schleggle, director of tietwork affairs for the union, contends that non-network personnel have moved into this kind of work more and more in the past two years. (MORE)
