To make it easy, let us say v,re are all actors on the \..Yorld stage and
have played many roles in many plp.ys--some cor:lic, some dramatic.
'Je are also the audience and knotJ not the plat.
Tt1o thousand years ago 1'ie played the scenes of the time of Jesus.
Nmu·, as 8ananda, the Great Director, is to put on the final shm,<J of
the seaGon. The actors have for~otten their lines and the parts
they played in the old plays. Orily a .fe1.·r have been reminded of' the
parts they played t1-10 thousand years ago. ·
Today' s play is played in darkness. The actors' heads are cover.ed
l"li th a black cape, vrhich vras us·ed as .a robe of one· dead. To this
the audience looked .for the ansl'Ter in the time vrhen it \•ras still
light. But let us cast the act in reality, for the director knows
the plot-~
The scene is Chicago and the midv-Test. The dat.e is December 21, 1954.
As the scene opens it is da1.m but still· dark. The actors are a\·Taken-
ed to the sound of a terrible rumbling. The earth shakes; the tall
buildings topple. The -vmters of Lake J.V!ichiga.n rise in a· terrifi9
wave "V·Thich covers the c.i ty and spree.ds east to Lake Brie. A new
ri ve:r forms and flows from the lake to the Gulf of IV.le.:t::ico.
Glad are the actors 'IIV"ho have a1;vaited the coming of the Guardians.
Amid the cries of anguish the question is heard: ff1'Jhy didn't someone
tell u.s that we might have moved. to safety?" But.in the days of the
warnings they .\vere told o·f th~ safe places-... the. eastern slopes of the
Ro.ckies, the Catskills e.nd the Allegheny ll.iiountains--but they said, · ·

or Japan, -but not herettr ·
And so the curtain falls on this act.
