Federal Bureau of Investigation · 169 pages · text by GLM-OCR

This Federal Bureau of Investigation file section collects 1949 Army intelligence reports of unidentified aerial objects seen around Camp Hood, Texas, forwarded by the San Antonio office, which told the Director it was reviewing and destroying such reports unless they held FBI interest. It also has 1957 FBI liaison memoranda on a radar-tracked object near Montauk Point and Benton, Pennsylvania, judged unlikely to be a Soviet operation. The file also includes a civilian Flying Saucer Researchers release arguing that saucers probably come from Mars.

ARTICLE TO APPEAR IN "LOOK" MAGAZINE EXPLAINING "FLYING BAUCERS"

Station on January 8, 1951, and indicated to Special Agent DeLoach that he had been requested to publish an article in "LOOK" Magazine, at an early date, explaining the Navy's development of so-called "Flying Saucers." Dr. indicated he desired to refer to the FBI in the first paragraph of his article and, therefore, he desired clearance for this purpose. Before presenting his article he expressed the opinion that publication of such an article would save the Bureau time and expense in running down numerous reported leads regarding balloons or reported saucers within the confines of this country. He also indicated release of erroneous information by amateur scientists concerning "flying saucers" had nearly caused waves of hysteria among the public in certain areas of the United States. Dr. explained that he had submitted to the FBI Laboratory a complete explanation of the development of the "flying saucers" which he said in effect was merely a huge balloon able to travel at a speed of 200 miles an hour and which was used for the purpose of promoting cosmic rays in order to intercept and destroy planes and missiles bent on destruction of the United States.

1. The first paragraph of Dr. Smith's proposed title was phrased as follows.

The Literal-minded FBI, skeptical but determined could not let the flying saucer excitement go by without getting to the bottom of it. Such a profusion of strange objects littering the American skies was too important to ignore.

10-page report by the nuclear physics branch of the Office of Naval Research, has given the answers. 94-3-4-317-3 Flying saucers were found are undeniably real. RECORDED 132
