Johnson made his discoveries by observing the spectral lines of light absorption of interstellar dust. He found that the dust absorbed light at a certain range of wavelength.

Identifying an element or compound by spectral information is similar to identifying a human by his fingerprints.

It has been known that star-light contains many colors. Scientists also know that molecules or atoms in the path of star-light are capable of absorbing a part of it.

This means that individual molecules can be identified positively by the particular spectral portion of the light they absorb on a one-to-one basis.

## IN MILLIONS.

Previous like studies of spectral lines indicated the presence of hydrocarbons. But since the combinations of known hydrocarbon compounds extends into the millions, further extensive study was required to identify the major components of dust from this spectral information.

Random testing of the possible hydrocarbon components of the interstellar dust would take several lifetimes. By systematic elimination of possibilities, Dr. Johnson reduced the field to porphyrins and carbolenoids, which are closely associated with chlorophyll. He compared the absorption band spectra of these substances in laboratory conditions simulating the extra-terrestrial environments of the dust and found that they matched.

Further investigation through both spectroscopic studies and laser research at the Electro-Optical Systems revealed the substance in question to be chlorophyll.

"We have indications that life started here (on search) from outside", Dr. Johnson declared. "The same thing could happen there".

If some of this dust should reach a planet like Mars, could the chlorophyll photosynthesize?

To illustrate the point, Dr. Johnson said he conducted some experiments on rocks estimated to be 4% billion years old. He found porphyrins, a " skeleton" form of chlorophyll.

Dr. Johnson speculated that the same mechanism condensation of dust into meteors, which are then attracted to planets - can be at work now as well as in the past when earth was born.

## Unroidable interference.

One of the commonest occurrences indicating the close presence of a UFO is the unavoidable interference with Earth's radio, electrical and electronic equipment, believed to be brought about by the different force field in which the UFO operates. Temporarily stalled cars, dead radios, distorted television screens and disrupted electronic equipment are among the features most frequently met with in a close encounter with a flying saucer. One of our correspondents in Westford, Mass., U.S.A., where there has been a record number of sightings this year, tells us that when a UFO passes near her home, a most extraordinary pattern of horizontal lines of small vexes (thus: wwwwwwwwwwww) appears on her television screen and that frequently when she goes outside to investigate, there is the culprit UFO! Included among the many reports of the increased world-wide UFO activity in recent months are typical ones such as the report from Azores published July 11 which reads: "Flying Object Stops Watches. A spokesman for Santa Maria Airport claimed today that a mysterious flying object apparently stopped all electro-magnetic watches at the airport when it flow slowly over the island yesterday. He said a white cylindrical object was seen flying slowly in a north-westerly direction at a height of 33,000 feet. Another report from Canberra, Australia, published soon after Mariner II was photographing Mars, reads: "Did Mysterious Object Distort Mars Signals? A mysterious glowing object - hovering near Canberra Airport while the U.S. Mariner space probe was taking pictures of Mars - has baffled experts in Canberra. Six members of the traffic control tower crew said the object hung suspended at about 5,000 feet for 40 minutes. It disappeared when an air force plane was sent out to identify it. Experts now are wondering if it was coincidence that the object was sighted shortly before nearby Tidinnbilla tracking station was scheduled to pick up Mariner signals. The station had unusual difficulty in locking on to Mariner at the time."
