This Federal Bureau of Investigation file section collects 1954 to 1961 correspondence and memoranda about flying saucers. Most of it concerns the Detroit Flying Saucer Club, which the Detroit office reported on from informants and chose not to investigate, while Bureau headquarters said saucer matters belonged to the Air Force. It also includes public letters to J. Edgar Hoover, a 1955 North Carolina sighting report, Leonard Stringfield's 1961 anonymous warning call, and policy reviews that restate the practice of referring reports to the Air Force.

Federal Bureau of Investigation Washington, D. C. FLIYING SAUCERS - Dear Sir: It is the responsibility of the Air Force's Project Blue Book to investigate and analyze UFO sightings. At times local or state law enforcement officials have been requested to make investigations of such cases. After a number of recent sightings in Rehoboth, Mass., announced that the FBI had questioned at least two of the witnesses. I am also aware of similar past cases. The color photographs taken at Grand Blanc, Michigan by Joe Perry, amateur astronomer, on February 13, 1960 is one past case. After notifying the Air Force he was referred to the FBI and an investigation was conducted by two agents from the Flint office. The photographs were subsequently furnished to the Air Force for analysis. What is the FBI's policy with respect to this matter of investigation or such cases? Is there an official FBI regulation pertaining to FBI UFO investigatory policy, and if so, I request a copy.
