FBI file: UFO, UFO Part 13

Federal Bureau of Investigation · 148 pages · text by OCR

This Federal Bureau of Investigation file section collects 1954 to 1961 correspondence and memoranda about flying saucers. Most of it concerns the Detroit Flying Saucer Club, which the Detroit office reported on from informants and chose not to investigate, while Bureau headquarters said saucer matters belonged to the Air Force. It also includes public letters to J. Edgar Hoover, a 1955 North Carolina sighting report, Leonard Stringfield's 1961 anonymous warning call, and policy reviews that restate the practice of referring reports to the Air Force.

Dear Mr.

with respect to your inquiry, sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects are not a matter within the investigative jurisdiction of the FBL. Inasmuch as your communication is of interest to another governmental agency, I am referring a copy of it to the Office of Special Investigations, Department of the Air Force.

With respect to your inquiry, sightings of

Your letter of April 11th has been received.

## Sincerely yours, J. Edgar Hoover

NOTE: is not identifiable in Bufiles. Joseph F. Perry of Grand Blanc, Michigan, was contacted by Bureau Agents from our Detroit Office at his request in March, 1960, regarding photographs he had taken of what he believed to be unidentified flying objects. These photographs were turned over to the Office of Special Investigations of the United States Air Force by our Detroit Office. Perry reported to the local paper that the FBI was conducting an investigation and it was necessary for this Bureau to straighten the record with that newspaper. Perry was advised that we had furnished his photographs to the Air Force and he subsequently wrote to the Director in April, 1960, indicating he was looking forward to the completion of the Air Force analysis of his photographs and their return to him. A copy of his letter was referred to the Air Force for a reply to him. DFC:rks
