This Federal Bureau of Investigation file release gathers memos, teletypes and letters from 1949 and 1950 on flying saucer reports. Most of it covers a March 1950 claim by a Knoxville radio technician that his surplus APN-7 radar detected an object over Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Navy radar never confirmed the object, and Air Force examiners judged his equipment unreliable. Other items include a cardboard saucer hoax near Elmira, New York, a pilot's 1949 formation sighting in Oregon and a Denver claim of a crashed disc.

Office Memorandum • UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT DATE: October 2, 1949 DIRECTOR, FBI SAC, Pittsburgh SUBJECT Informant OFLYING DISCS, MISCELLANEOUS On September 26, 1949, 8. Charleston, West Virginia, appeared at the Charleston, West Virginia, resident agency and gave to Special Agent the attached letter. Mr. stated that he had written the letter following a pleasure flight from Clark Field, St. Albans, West Virginia, to Parkersburg, West Virginia, on September 25, 1949. Mr. stated that after writing the letter, he did not know whether it would be of any interest to the FBI and decided that instead of mailing it directly to the Bureau at Washington, he would contact the local agent and turn it over to him if it were thought it would be of interest to the Bureau. Mr. stated that he has set out the complete details of this incident in his letter and that there is nothing further that he can add. He further stated that he is certain this was not a mirage and that it actually occurred. No further action is being taken by this office unless specified to do so by the Bureau.
