Documents / FOIA release
This FBI file section collects Bureau correspondence on flying discs from 1947 to 1950. It includes a Portland field office memo on police officers who saw a silvery object over the city on September 11, 1947, and letters from citizens with sightings, theories and questions, along with Hoover's form replies. There is also a Chicago memo about a letter describing a secret saucer bomber, and a Louisville report on Al Hixenbaugh's June 1950 film of a disk. Other items include a Yuba City informant's drawings of a supposed Russian saucer and a note on Donald Keyhoe's book.

( e ) The objects of light have been described as follows:
(2) To Ll and from it appeared as the orange lights rotating about a service center, "like the jet aircraft making slow rolls in tight formation". It had a wide spend range.
(2) For TG, and Sauer, it appeared as a reddish orange ball of fire about one foot in diameter, travelling at a high rate of speed.
(2) To L, AA and AD1, it appeared to be a pulsating orange yellow projectile shaped flame, with regular period of pulsation on 3 to 5 seconds, off 3 to 5 seconds. Later, as the object increased the range the pulsations appeared to increase to on 7 to 8 seconds and off 7 to 0 seconds.
3: I check with the Navy Survey Central, Kottek, Alaska revealed that ballcone were released at the following times:
22 January - 0445. and 2005 (approximately)
23 January - 0450. (approximately)
4. On 23 January winds aloft at 1000 feet were reported at 0400 as from $ 310^{\circ} $ T at 35 knots, and at 2000 feet from $ 240^{\circ} $ T at 37 knots, while the object was reported to be on an ascending - westerly course.
In view of the fact that no weather balloons were known to have been released within a reasonable time before the sightings, it appears that the object or objects were not balloons. If not balloons the objects must be regarded as phantoms (possibly metamorphs), the exact nature of which could not be determined by this office. Not linked to a story yet.
