FBI file: UFO, UFO Part 05

Federal Bureau of Investigation · 74 pages · text by OCR

This is part five of the FBI's UFO file, a set of Bureau memoranda and reports from 1947 to 1949. Most of it covers the FBI's inquiry into the Maury Island flying disc story in Tacoma, which concluded that the disc fragments were ordinary rock formations and that the story was a hoax. It also examines the fatal crash of a B-25 at Kelso and finds no sign of sabotage. The file includes other items: the Rhodes disc photographs, a proposed flying saucer convention in Alexandria, Louisiana, and ash from a fire near Scranton that someone suggested came from a flying saucer.

SUBJECT:

You will recall that Mr. advised the Bureau of a letter which Walter Winchell had received from an individual in Los Angeles indicating that he had seen a flying saucer leave the ground within his view and in which letter he theorized that this might have been a landing from another planet.

The Los Angeles Office was requested to locate and review the writer of this letter, Street, Los Angeles 7, California.

The Los Angeles Office has now advised that the have no knowledge of any and that other investigation to locate was unproductive. It would appear, therefore, that this may have been a prank.

You may desire to advise Mr. that there is no such person at the address given inasmuch as he indicated that Mr. Winchell intended to do a column on this letter.
