FBI file: UFO, UFO Part 04

Federal Bureau of Investigation · 77 pages · text by GLM-OCR

This Federal Bureau of Investigation file section collects 1947 records on flying disc reports, including field office memoranda from Butte, Seattle, Salt Lake City and San Francisco on sightings in Washington, Montana, Utah and Idaho. Several were attributed to burnt paper or weather balloons, and Wright Field judged debris from a Danford, Illinois farm a hoax unconnected to Project Mogul. After the Army Air Forces described FBI work as chasing "ash can covers, toilet seats and whatnot," the Bureau discontinued its flying disc investigations and referred reports to the Air Forces.

The following story of the I observed near the Grand marina, as impossible as it may seem, is positively true. I never asked nor noted any notoriety for just accidentally being in the right spot at the right time to observe what I did. I reported something that I know any pilo would have reported. I don't think that in any way my observation was due to any coincidence of eye sight or July. I have no reason for my pilot.

On June 24th, Tuesday, 1947, I had finished my work for the General Air Service at Chehalis, Washington, and at about two o'clock I took off from Chehalis, Washington, airport with the intention of going to Yakima, Washington. My trip was delayed for an hour to search for a large mine transport that supposedly went down near or around the southern side of Elk. Rainier in the state of Washington. (This transport has been covered at the time of this writing—July 29, 1947.)

I flow directly toward Mt. Rainier after reaching an altitude of about 9,500 feet, which is the approximate elevation of the high plateau from which Mt. Rainier rises. I had made one group of this high plateau to the southeast, searching all of the vantage ridges for this marine chirp. I flew to the west down and near the ridge side of the canyon where Ashford, Washington, is located.

300 degree turn to the right and above the little city of Mineral, moving again toward St. Claire. I climbed back up to an altitude of approximately 9,200 foot.

The air was so smooth that day that it was a real pleasure flight and, when I piloted so when the airplane and the are flying at a higher altitude, I tried out my relations in the direction of New York,
