This Federal Bureau of Investigation file section collects 1947 records on flying disc reports, including field office memoranda from Butte, Seattle, Salt Lake City and San Francisco on sightings in Washington, Montana, Utah and Idaho. Several were attributed to burnt paper or weather balloons, and Wright Field judged debris from a Danford, Illinois farm a hoax unconnected to Project Mogul. After the Army Air Forces described FBI work as chasing "ash can covers, toilet seats and whatnot," the Bureau discontinued its flying disc investigations and referred reports to the Air Forces.

IADD FROM : 67C DATE: August 20, 1947 SUBJECT: There is attached hereto copies of two memoranda dated July 24, 1947, and July 16, 1947, concerning City, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma These memoranda were made available to Special Agent of the Liaison Section by General Schulgen of the Army Air Forces Intelligence. General Schulgen requested that the Bureau conduct a background investigation of these two individuals mentioned in the attached memoranda since they were among the first to sight the alleged flying discs. He indicated that he desired that the investigation be directed toward ascertaining whether or not either of these individuals have any subversive background and to ascertain whether or not they had any ulterior motives for reporting these sittings. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended this memorandum be forwarded to the Internal Security Section. Attachment SEM:rhr 2 a serious case. He was addressed any investigation.
