This FBI file section, from 1947, gathers Army Air Forces counterintelligence reports and FBI memoranda about the summer's flying disc reports. It includes a Boise newspaper pilot's sworn statement describing a black object he filmed on 9 July 1947, interviews with a United Air Lines captain and a Hamilton Field soldier, and a Pan American crew's orange object near Boston. Other items cover the Tacoma disk fragment story, which was admitted to be false, the fatal B-25 crash at Kelso, a coded "Radio Ham" message dismissed as a hoax, and an Air Defense Command assessment that "something is really flying around."

LADD FROM SAC, San Francisco SUBJECT: FLYING DISCS DATE: August 8, 1947 Reference is made to my letter to the Bureau dated July 28, 1947 entitled as above forwarding a copy of a report furnished to me by Lieutenant Fourth Air Force, Hamilton Field, California, setting forth the results of inquiries made by his office concerning the reported sightings of flying discs. As of further interest to the Bureau in this regard, there are transmitted herewith photostatic copies of three letters dated August 4, 1947, and entitled "Investigation of Flying Disos," furnished to me by AC of S, A-2, Army Air Forces, Hamilton Field, California, who is acting in the absence of enclosing copies of reports of additional reported sightings of flying discs by persons in Oregon and Arizona, together with the results of their investigations in that regard. It is noted that these investigations were conducted prior to the time Bureau instructions were issued that our own Bureau would conduct inquiries into the reported sightings of flying discs. Copies of these reports are being forwarded to the Portland and Phoenix Offices for the completion of their files in connection with this subject.
