This FBI file section, from 1947, gathers Army Air Forces counterintelligence reports and FBI memoranda about the summer's flying disc reports. It includes a Boise newspaper pilot's sworn statement describing a black object he filmed on 9 July 1947, interviews with a United Air Lines captain and a Hamilton Field soldier, and a Pan American crew's orange object near Boston. Other items cover the Tacoma disk fragment story, which was admitted to be false, the fatal B-25 crash at Kelso, a coded "Radio Ham" message dismissed as a hoax, and an Air Defense Command assessment that "something is really flying around."

)ffice Mc DATE: 7/21/47 OM : E. G. Fitch BJECT: FLYING SAUCER 67c Colonel Carl Selbransen of the Intelligence Division of the War Department advised Special Agent S. K. Reynolds of the Liaison Section that the War Department has received a telegram, dated New York, New York, July 5 follows: "TOR FUNNY THAT THE CONCERNING FILING LINKS SUGGEST INDENTATE CONTACT OF TLLINGIS WHO MAY HAVE INFECTED THEM CONCERNING INLIR ORIGIN." Colonel Golbranson furnished Dr. Reynolds with a copy of the memorandum titled "Report on Flying Saucers," dated July 7, 1947, addressed to Commanding General, 3rd Ark Base Unit, Rolling Field, Washington, E. C., from John D. Schindler ... a copy of which is attached to this memorandum. The attached memorandum sets forth information and statistics regarding two reportings of incidents of flying rocks. There is also attached hereto a map of the Illinois River area which was furnished to L. Reynolds by Colonel Golbranson. Colonel Golbranson stated that according to this may the incidents reported in the attached memorandum are in the general vicinity of which was given as the address of in the anonymous telegram received by the War Department. Colonel Golbranson advised that in view of the fact that the observation of the flying cancers was made on July 7th and the date of the unsigned telegram is July 5th, together with the proximity of to the points where the objects were observed, he desired the Bureau conduct some investigation of Shaver to determine whether or not he has any information pertaining to the origin of the flying cancers. Mr. Reynolds advised Colonel Golbranson that his request would be made down to you and the results of any investigation would be brought to his attention. CCK . . . JK . TTOC : It is recommended that the field be directed to make inquiries regarding and, if deemed advisable, interview him regarding any information that he has relative to flying dist.
