This FBI file section, from 1947, gathers Army Air Forces counterintelligence reports and FBI memoranda about the summer's flying disc reports. It includes a Boise newspaper pilot's sworn statement describing a black object he filmed on 9 July 1947, interviews with a United Air Lines captain and a Hamilton Field soldier, and a Pan American crew's orange object near Boston. Other items cover the Tacoma disk fragment story, which was admitted to be false, the fatal B-25 crash at Kelso, a coded "Radio Ham" message dismissed as a hoax, and an Air Defense Command assessment that "something is really flying around."

DATE: September 4, 1947 ATTENTION: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR D. M. LADD Reference is made to San Francisco letter dated August 28,1947, and to Bureau teletype to Phoenix dated August 30,1947. With reference to the above matter, I desire to point out that the letter of reference from San Francisco did not reach Phoenix until September 2, 1947. On August 29, 1947, a Mr. C. C. C. called at the Phoenix office and exhibited credentials reflecting that he is a representative of A-2, Fourth Air Force, Hamilton Field, California. He also exhibited orders emanating from the office of Colonel A-2, Fourth Air Force, Hamilton Field, California, instructing him to proceed to Phoenix immediately and contact the FBI office, at which time a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation would be designated to accompany him to interview who had previously reported the photographing of a flying disc. The orders further indicated that the San Francisco office of the FBI was transmitting further information relating to Mr. Commission. ASAC telephonically communicated with SAC HARRY KIMBALL of the San Francisco office and Mr. KIMBALL verified the above information and stated that a letter had been directed to the Phoenix office suggesting that the Phoenix office assist any representative who called from A-2 in the interrogation of RHODES. SAC KIMBALL stated that in connection with flying discs, he had maintained close contact with Colonel and that close cooperation existed. He further advised that many reports of flying discs had been received at San Francisco and that a full discussion concerning the results of inquiries had been held with Colonel In connection with flying disc investigations, Mr. advised he had maintained close touch with the Bureau and had apparently handled these matters in accordance with Bureau policy. In view of the above, Special Agent of the Phoenix office was permitted to work with Mr. in the interview of The results of the inquiry are set out hereunder.
