This FBI file section, from 1947, gathers Army Air Forces counterintelligence reports and FBI memoranda about the summer's flying disc reports. It includes a Boise newspaper pilot's sworn statement describing a black object he filmed on 9 July 1947, interviews with a United Air Lines captain and a Hamilton Field soldier, and a Pan American crew's orange object near Boston. Other items cover the Tacoma disk fragment story, which was admitted to be false, the fatal B-25 crash at Kelso, a coded "Radio Ham" message dismissed as a hoax, and an Air Defense Command assessment that "something is really flying around."

Director, FBI Dear Sir: Reference is made to Bureau letter dated July 21, 1947, addressed to Mrs. Hicksville, Long Island, New York, a copy of which was sent to the New York Office. Mrs. was interviewed by Special Agent on August 12, 1947, at which time she advised that this coded message had appeared in "Newsday," the local newspaper of Nassau and Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. She stated that the message had appeared in the "County Irritant," a feature of this paper, and had been signed "Radic Ham." b7c "r. of "Newsday," Hempstead, New York, was interviewed and advised that this article had been sent to the newspaper by letter which was signed "Radio Ham," and explained that he had no way of determining the identity of the writer. Mr. stated that it was his opinion that the code had been made up by some local "screwball" who had been affected by all of the newspaper publicity that had been given at that time to the story about flying discs. There is enclosed an article appearing in the July 12th issue of "Newsday" concerning this coded message, which might be of interest in this matter. Unless advised to the contrary, no further effort is being made to establish the identity of the person who signed himself "Radio Ham."
