This FBI Freedom of Information release is part of the Bureau's file on Silas M. Newton. It holds 1941 reports from the Kansas City and Los Angeles field offices in an espionage case that began in New York City. Agents looked at Newton's oil businesses, including the Kansas Western Pipeline Company and the Newton Development Company, along with his bank accounts in McCracken and Wichita, his hotel residences and his marital status. Informants described him as an oil promoter and a loyal American. The case was left pending with undeveloped leads.

NEWTON to subject concerning the possible marriage Will endeavor to locate and interview of SILAS M. NENTON is order to ascertain in a discreet manner whether NENTON is married to subject Will make investigation at the United States National Bank to ascertain in a discreet manner whether or not SILAS M. NEWTON is now, or has been in the past, writing checks payable to under that name, or known aliases. THE LOS ANGELES FIELD DIVISION: At Long Beach California, will discretely interview an employee of NEWTON, with a view to ascertaining whether or not NEWTON is married to, or associated with, THE KANSAS CITY FIELD DIVISION: At McCracker, Kansas will interview officials of the Citizens Bank to obtain information concerning SILAS M. NEWTON, with specific view to ascertain whether or not checks written by NEWTON have cleared the bank, marked payable to under that name or known aliases. will ascertain her present address and such information as may be pertinent to this case.
