This FBI Freedom of Information release collects Albuquerque field office reports from July 1970 to May 1971 on Silas Mason Newton, the Buckhorn Mining Company and the Magnetic Research Foundation, which were investigated for interstate transportation of stolen property and confidence games. Agents suspected that Newton was running a salted mining swindle near Silver City, New Mexico, since assays found no mercury or silver in the ore. The file also lists his arrest record. The case was closed after a lender said he had not been swindled.

The following investigation was conducted by SA on September 30, 1970: ## AT LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA File Number A-226576, which is a criminal case in the Superior Court, Los Angeles County, Los Angeles, California, charges SILAS M. NEWTON with illegally selling a security for value without having permission from the Commission of Corporations, State of California. He allegedly sold an interest in an oil well to be drilled in Sedona, Arizona. The file reflects that on July 21, 1970, attorney for the victims in this criminal case, advised Superior Court Judge RICHARD HAYBEN that complete restitution had been made by NEWTON to the victims, and that mutual releases had been signed with regard to all transactions between NEWTON and the victims. This case came up for hearing on July 24, 1970, and the defendant entered a motion to withdraw his plea of guilty and to enter a plea of not guilty. On the court's own motion, the case was dismissed in the interest of justice pursuant to Section 1385 Penal Code (PC), and NEWTON's bail was exonerated. For the information of the Albuquerque Office, the probation report, which was dated June 30, 1969, contained the following information concerning NEWTON: He was born on July 19, 1887, at Shelby County, Kentucky. He is divorced and is a college graduate. He has claimed his occupation was that of a geologist, who had an income of $500 a month, being employed by the Mechanic Research Foundation, Tucson, Arizona. He claims to have a Bachelor of Science in geology from Baylor University and to have studied for six months at Oxford University in London. NEWTON has been married four times. Two of these relationships ended in divorce, and two with the deaths of his wives. He was last married in 1950, and this wife divorced
