This FBI file on animal mutilations brings together newspaper clippings, correspondence and New Mexico livestock and State Police reports from the 1970s. The clippings report cattle mutilations near Dulce, Cuba and Taos, including an orange light seen near Taos that left a powder with potassium and magnesium, the same elements found on marked cattle hides. Senator Harrison Schmitt's letter to rancher Manuel Gomez forwards State Police Chief Martin Vigil's 1978 reports and notes that Officer Gabe Valdez had found no positive leads.

Gomez General Delivery Dulce, New Mexico 87528 Dear Manuel: This letter is with further reference to the livestock mutilations that have been plaguing northern New Mexico and southern Colorado ranchers in recent months. Enclosed is a letter from Chief Martin E. Vigil, Director of the New Mexico State Police, written in response to my inquiry on your behalf. Enclosed also are copies of all the mutilation reports prepared by Officer Gabe Valdez. Officer Valdez has assuredone that his investigation is continuing, but so far has developed no positive leads as to the identity of the mutilator$s). Please be assured that I will stay in touch with the State Police, and will contact you again if any new information becomes available.
