This FBI file, released in July 2021 to John Greenewald Jr. of The Black Vault, concerns United Nuclear Scientific Supplies. The FBI reviewed 165 pages and released 48. A 2008 New York memo asks for a case on an unknown caller who tried to buy a concentrated Polonium-210 solution and asked how to get around NRC licensing rules. A 2010 memo closes that case because no criminality was established. The remaining 2003 and 2004 records cover CART forensic exams of computers received from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

To: WMDD From: New York Re: 279B-NY-NEW, 08/29/2008 needed it to detect counterfeit US currency. explained that one needed an NRC license to posses this material. asked if there was "any way around the NRC requirements." said that he did not know of any way around the NRC. then asked if he could purchase any other Polonium-210 sources from UNSS and reduce them to a concentrated solution. told that would not be possible. then terminated the call. (U) expressed a belief that such a concentrated solution of Polonium-210 would not be useful for counterfeit currency detection, but would make a very effective poison. (U) Due to the fact that the request was highly unusual and there is no practical purpose for such a Polonium solution, NY requests a case be opened to identify the individual who requested to purchase the solution and the motives behind the request.
