This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying saucers from 1957 to 1966. It includes a 1957 memo on the rise in UFO reports after Sputnik, in which the Air Force told the FBI that the recent sightings were nonauthentic. It also holds a Havana report of a disc over Matahambre, Cuba, and inquiries about Robert T. Stone's Inter Continental Aerial Research Foundation and a Torrington, Connecticut sighting. Hoover's replies state that UFOs were never within FBI jurisdiction.

National Headquarters 5108 Findlay Street Seattle, \\lashington News R'el ease July 1, 19,58 Unidentified Flying Objects Interplanetary There is now sufficient information based on data compiled from eyewitness accounts that a high percentage of aerial phenomena such as those popularly described as unidentified flying objects are 11 intelligently controled craft whose ports of origin are outside Earths atmosphere." This is the conclusion reached as the result of a study begun by Aerial Phenomena Re-search Group in Seattle, Washingto n on January 1, 1954 into the field of unidentified flying objects and possibly related incidents. Commenting on this study, National Director of Aerial Phenomena Research Group Robert J. Gribble said: "Although the accounts con sidered in this study did not contain scientific measurements of each sighting, it was possible to establish certain valid conclusions by the application of statistical methods in the treatment of the data. Analyzed and arranged, the data did show a marked pattern. "On the basis of this marked pattern of the data, A.P.R.G. has concluded that a high percentage of the more than 5,000 accounts of unidentified flying objects examined in this study represent observ ations of technological developments outside the range of present-day scientific knowledge. "Therefore, it is highly probable that many of the unidentified flying objects considered in this study are 'spacecraft from other planets 1 • 11 A.P.R.G. highly recommends that all national security· agencies take immediate steps to strip the unidentified flying objects of the special n secrecy status" they have been given and. the aura of mystery they have unfortunatly acquired.
