This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying saucers from 1957 to 1966. It includes a 1957 memo on the rise in UFO reports after Sputnik, in which the Air Force told the FBI that the recent sightings were nonauthentic. It also holds a Havana report of a disc over Matahambre, Cuba, and inquiries about Robert T. Stone's Inter Continental Aerial Research Foundation and a Torrington, Connecticut sighting. Hoover's replies state that UFOs were never within FBI jurisdiction.

Donahoe RE : FLYING SAUCERS Neither Agents Handbook nor manuals contain instructions re garding handling of reports of sightings of uni dentified flying objects although policy has been well established by above Bureau bulletins and SAC Letters and no problems have arisen in connection with this matter. Air Force has on several occasions assured that Bureau will be advised of any developments of interest to us . Last such assurance given 11 - 12- 57 (62- 8389~ - 38 7) . Our lTaison with Air Force on this matter is with OSI although within Air Force this matter is handled by Ai r Technical and Intelligence Center , Wright - Patterson Air Force Base , Ohio . ACTION : For your information . There appears to be no necessity for further instructions to the field or insertions in the Handbook or manuals at this time . - 2 -
