This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying saucers from 1957 to 1966. It includes a 1957 memo on the rise in UFO reports after Sputnik, in which the Air Force told the FBI that the recent sightings were nonauthentic. It also holds a Havana report of a disc over Matahambre, Cuba, and inquiries about Robert T. Stone's Inter Continental Aerial Research Foundation and a Torrington, Connecticut sighting. Hoover's replies state that UFOs were never within FBI jurisdiction.

SUBJECT: REPORTS OF FLYING DISCS
FOREIGN MISCELLANEOUS
The following information is submitted as of interest
to the Bureau in the event reports of flying discp are still desired.

The Havana daily newspaper "Diario de la Marina" November 12,
1957, carried a dispatch datel~~ November 11, 19§.J~__at Pinar del Rio,
Cuba, reporting that JOSE. ~IET0 and OARMEL?~ZMAN, who had
just arrived in that town from the Matahambre Mines in Pinar del Rio
Province, claimed that they had seen a flying disc in the shape of a
man's hat hovering over the general area of Matahambre for several }
minutes. They claimed that this disc was larger than ordinary airpla
normally seen in that area and that it was completely silent in its
flight. They said that it disappeared at a very high speed towards
the sea. There was no further descriptive information furnished in J
this newspaper article. It is noted that Matahambre is located
approximately 90 miles to the west of Havana . No other reports
corroborating the above were
by this office.
