This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying saucers from 1957 to 1966. It includes a 1957 memo on the rise in UFO reports after Sputnik, in which the Air Force told the FBI that the recent sightings were nonauthentic. It also holds a Havana report of a disc over Matahambre, Cuba, and inquiries about Robert T. Stone's Inter Continental Aerial Research Foundation and a Torrington, Connecticut sighting. Hoover's replies state that UFOs were never within FBI jurisdiction.

Take as an authoritative answer the following excerpt £ran a letter written to me by a local US.AF official: 11 ••• Chapter 4, Section B, paragraph 2a(7), of Air Force Manual 190-4, 6 June 196o, says in part: 'When the ..• manuscript concerns military subjects.,national, or foreign affairs, it will be submitted to SAF-OI to review for accuracy, propriety .. • • and to obtain final clearance frau the Department of Defense . This policy applies to Air Force active duty personnel, retired personnel, civilian emplcyees, and members of the civilian components.' SAF-OI is the symbol for the Office of Information, Secretary of the Air Force. "Another directive, Air Force Regulation 200-2, governs activities as they relate to Unidentified Flying Objects. This regulation says only that base Information Officer s may examine manuscripts which are subnitted to them to be sure they are factual and accurate. The sam~ groups of persons as indicated above, according to this regulation, may not use Air Force material on Unidentified Flying Objects tor their writings." 5 ~te a challenge, isn ' t it? But as long as you and I are willing to meet it, there is still the hope that the censors will admit defeat and capitulate. You may be asking yourself, "If the censors do exist, then why is Bryant allowed to continue publishing his manuscripts?"
