FBI file 62-HQ-83894, section 9

Department of War · 290 pages · text from the file's own layer

This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying saucers from 1957 to 1966. It includes a 1957 memo on the rise in UFO reports after Sputnik, in which the Air Force told the FBI that the recent sightings were nonauthentic. It also holds a Havana report of a disc over Matahambre, Cuba, and inquiries about Robert T. Stone's Inter Continental Aerial Research Foundation and a Torrington, Connecticut sighting. Hoover's replies state that UFOs were never within FBI jurisdiction.

they had been engaged in producing or testi.ng a saucer-•like craft during the 1952 sighting crisis. I never got
an answer; instead the post G-2, Col. Frank O. Adams,
summoned me to hia office and instructed me to explain
the motives £or my inquiry.
After assuring Col. Adams that I had not intended to
undermine local security measures, but had merely posed
an honest question, he recommended I be more prudent in
the future. Here, we mustn't reproach Col. Adams too
severely, because his job was to abide by the military
intelligence axiom of "never underestimate a potential
enem.y.n This axiom. no doubt inspired the following
Eustis pol~cy, a po-licy which was probably the basis for
Col. Adams's investigation:
"A great part of the information sought by
people who do not have the best interests of
the United States at heart. is obtained from unclassi
fied sources through apparently innocent requests.
Any unusual request for information concerning the
installation, our personnel, or other data, should
be brought to the attention of the Assistant Chief
of Staff, G-2." J

You may see nqw that the sources as well as the fruits
of my UFO research are subject to scrutiny by all interested
authorities. This fact became even clearer several months
