Department of War · 290 pages · text from the file's own layer

This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying saucers from 1957 to 1966. It includes a 1957 memo on the rise in UFO reports after Sputnik, in which the Air Force told the FBI that the recent sightings were nonauthentic. It also holds a Havana report of a disc over Matahambre, Cuba, and inquiries about Robert T. Stone's Inter Continental Aerial Research Foundation and a Torrington, Connecticut sighting. Hoover's replies state that UFOs were never within FBI jurisdiction.

Dear Sir;
A research group t hat I am in is presently engaged in the study
of the eubjQ t of UFOs ( Unidentified Flying Objects) , s ometimes ludicrous
-ly termed "flying saucerst'.
~
Since ou r research takes us into every aspect of the subject,
certain r umors and statements appear which we feel justify an examination
to the fullest. One such statement is that , certain federal a gencies,
namely the FBl and CIA, have carried on private investigations of UFOs
and/or t hat such a gencies have, at times, worked in conjunction with t he
Air Force on its own study of t he subje ct . Anothe r such statement is that,
a gents of the i ntelli gence bureaus (FBI and CIA) have, at times, pres-
-sured private citizens to keep quiet about t~ "mysterious objec_!f~ . / 1/-' -
sor-xs ~ t ~ 1 J ~Y-=- -t hat t hey saw.

My group would be very glad if your a gency would either confirm
-or deny the above statements regarding , ~of c oarse, only t he FBI and i ts
agents ( a similar letter to this will be written to the CIA). Your
answer will be greatly appreciated .
