This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying saucers from 1957 to 1966. It includes a 1957 memo on the rise in UFO reports after Sputnik, in which the Air Force told the FBI that the recent sightings were nonauthentic. It also holds a Havana report of a disc over Matahambre, Cuba, and inquiries about Robert T. Stone's Inter Continental Aerial Research Foundation and a Torrington, Connecticut sighting. Hoover's replies state that UFOs were never within FBI jurisdiction.

Dear Sir: This morning, your Newport News agent John S. Castles visited me at my office at Fort Eustis, Virginia, and questioned me about 10 minutes regarding my inter est in reports of sightings of Unidenti- fied Flying Objects (UFO) -- namely a letter which I wrote to you in l J1959 and two of my recent letters to local state and Federal agencies regarding the role of those agencies in processing UFO reports . ~ Mr. Castles stated that the objective of this interview was to determine my official identity and my motive for writing as a private citizen the letters in question. He also told me he was going to prepare a 11memorandum for the files11 on this interview. I request that you furnish me a copy of this memorandum or report.
