This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying saucers from 1957 to 1966. It includes a 1957 memo on the rise in UFO reports after Sputnik, in which the Air Force told the FBI that the recent sightings were nonauthentic. It also holds a Havana report of a disc over Matahambre, Cuba, and inquiries about Robert T. Stone's Inter Continental Aerial Research Foundation and a Torrington, Connecticut sighting. Hoover's replies state that UFOs were never within FBI jurisdiction.

-- I , NF 62- 720 This letter was forwarded to the Norfolk Office by the Richmond Division. On 9/17/63, Mrs . BEVERLY EARLEY, Secretary to Personnel Officer, Civilian Personnel Records Section, Fort Eust is, Virginia, advised SA JOHNS . CASTLES that files in her possession reflect that LARRY WILLIAM BRYANT, who was born, 2/23/38, Shenandoah, Page County, Virginia, and who has Social Security Number 230- 44- 9093, was employed at Fort Eustis as a clerk- typist on 5/22/58 and is presently employed as editorial clerk (typing) Transportability Branch, Technical Manuals Division, Directorate of Training Literature, United States Army Transportation School, Fort Eustis, Virginia . Mrs. EARLEY said her records reflect that BRYANT resides 5603 Madison Avenue, Newport NeNs, Virginia, and formerly resided at 1002 Arnold Street, Newport News, Virginia. - On 9/17/63 , BRYANT was interviewed by SA ~ N u . CASTI-ES in Room 206, United States Army Transportation School, Fort Eustis, Virginia. BRYANT advised that he had become interested in UFO while he was a member of the Grotmd Observer Corps for the Civil Defense in the old City of Warwick, virginia . He said since this time he has become intensell.y interested in UFOs and has done considerable research through read:i.ng and writin._-:; and obtaining informatlon through directing letters to different military agencies and civilian agencies ,-rho have reported sighting UFOs in the past . He said his interest in UFOs is a personal one and has no official status with his current job . He said presently he has prepared a research paper on UFOs and has directed it to Department of Defense for clearance so that he might offer it for publicat:i on to a ma~azine or newspaper. He said this research paper is an essay- type paper . While being questioned, BRYJ\NT stated that he had previously written to the FBI concerning UFOs and asked did the interviewing agent know· the date which he wrote, to which he was advised that it was in 1959 that he had directed a letter to the FBI. At the conclusion of the interview, BRYANT asked what was going to be done with the information obtained from the interview, to which he was told that a memorandum would be prepared for the file .
