This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying saucers from 1957 to 1966. It includes a 1957 memo on the rise in UFO reports after Sputnik, in which the Air Force told the FBI that the recent sightings were nonauthentic. It also holds a Havana report of a disc over Matahambre, Cuba, and inquiries about Robert T. Stone's Inter Continental Aerial Research Foundation and a Torrington, Connecticut sighting. Hoover's replies state that UFOs were never within FBI jurisdiction.

would not identity himaelt, and in the phone call alerted

range 11 • Mr. Stringfield adviaed that the caller aaid
to be prepared when contuaion beg1na resulting trom
these aightinga. 'i'he caller related that theae a1gl)t1ngs
-would be aeen between certain datea, and that to the
best of' Mr. Str1ngf'1eld's recollection, the caller
atated,"Yark theae dates, October 15 to october 19,
during which will be the greateat incident 1n UFO
(Unidentified Plying ObJecta) activity over the years".
According to~. Stringfield, the cal.ler remarked
further, "I'll rema.1.n in touch with ;you, and will call
back atter the nineteenth11 •
Mr. Str1ngt1el'1 adv1aed that the caller refused
to identity himself1 and according to Mt-: Stringfield
seemed to speak intelligently in the message he had
to relate to Ml-. · Stringfield. ·
Mr~ • Stringtield adviaed that he waa concerned
about th1a telephone call 1n that 1f there were any truth
1n the matter, and it auch sightings should occur,; · that
it may caup panic among the populou• 1n thi1 country,
and that · turther;that the caller ' seemed to •~•ak very
serioualy, · and there was no ind1cat1on in the caller•a
voice or·· mea ■age to 1nd1oate that it• was a Joke or a
prank. •
Mr. Stringfield advised that it 1a not unusual
that he receivea ·telephone oalla tconcerning unidentified
objects1 · 1na1muoh as he, Stringfield, is authorized to
report •aightinga ·of un1dent1f1ed obJecte to the
headquartera, Air 'Detenae Couunand, ·at Columbus, Ohio. ·
He stated turther 'that it 1.• not unusual that he might
receive ■uch a call inasmuch a1 he 1s p ubl i cl Y known
aa a peraon who 11 interested in matters relating to
unidentified flying obJects. ·
Mr. · Str1ngf1eld aov1aed that he 1a an advisor
to the National Investigations Committee on ·aer1al
phenomena, Which committee 1a located on Connecticut
