This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying saucers from 1957 to 1966. It includes a 1957 memo on the rise in UFO reports after Sputnik, in which the Air Force told the FBI that the recent sightings were nonauthentic. It also holds a Havana report of a disc over Matahambre, Cuba, and inquiries about Robert T. Stone's Inter Continental Aerial Research Foundation and a Torrington, Connecticut sighting. Hoover's replies state that UFOs were never within FBI jurisdiction.

PERSONS The Assistant to the President Bureau files reflect SAC, Detroit, 3/9/IO, advised of article (which is attached to Perry's letter of 3/ 21/ 60) appearing in Detroit Times reflecting Flint, Michigan, Resident Agency furnished slides of photographs taken by Perry allegedly showing a saucer-like object silhoue~d against the moon. Perry contacted Flint RA 3/ 4/ 60 advising he had been professional photographer, had taken photographs of moon and after developing same noted wa1at appeared to be flying object in one of them. Perry furnished information to press. Flint RA received press inquiry, advised only that Perry had turned 2 slides over to FBI and they were being made available to appropriate authorities. Detroit Times advised 3/ 9/ 60 FBI nas not and is not conducting investigation concerning slides but turned over the information to the Air Force. When slides turned over to Air Force, they were requested to return slides to Perry and advised that no action contemplated by the Bureau and was being referred to them for any action they deemed advisable.
