This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence and memoranda on flying saucers from 1952 to 1954. It holds letters from the public, which J. Edgar Hoover forwarded to the Air Force's Office of Special Investigations, and a 1952 teletype about a saucer-shaped light over the Savannah River Plant. It also includes an FBI Laboratory examination of the burned cap of scoutmaster D. S. DesVergers, which found no identifying residue, and instructions to field offices to refer disc reports to the Air Force.

Inamuch as Seattle is the District Headquarters £or the Intelligence
Agencies in the PacU'ic Northwest, reports received, usual.ly .t'rom the USCG,
concerning incidents in the state o.f Oregon are imm.ediatel.7 reported to
that ot!ice as well ae the Intelligence Agencies.
Many' or the reports are of a nebulous type, impossible ot corroborating, \/'
and of doubttul authenticity. Some, by preliminaey inquiey and eT&luation, ~
proTe to be without foundation. HoweTer, as stated abo-n, reports of this
type are ilaediately disseminated to the Intelligence Agencies without g
eTaluation, followed by a.d.ditional information as obtained. 9
This office has no control of the dissemination or these reports ~
on a "spot" basis by the local intelligence ottices to their Headquarters

The purpose or this letter is to advise the Bureau that in all
instances immediate dissemination is made of all urmsual incidents that
appear to haTe any military significance. This office also aota as a co
ordinator on all reports to be certain that a.11 interested aaencies are //

aigni!'icant incidents as they arise but will not be bothered with eTery
trivial incident that occurs unless instructed.
