This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying disks from 1949 and 1950. Most of it concerns a letter to Walter Winchell, passed on by Ernest Cuneo, from Peter Camerlon Jones, who said he saw a top-shaped silver object in the mountains near Los Angeles in August 1947. Los Angeles agents could not find Jones, and Hoover suggested the letter might be a prank. The file also holds a Navy intelligence report on 6 or 7 discs seen over southern Oregon on 27 May 1949, plus letters from members of the public about Chicago and Toronto.

Dear Mr Hoover : - Flying Dancers Your acknowledgement of my letter in regard to your excellent & faithful service, recid Feb. 22 here Ive had something on my chest" for several years, and it may be the time and way to do something about it, now also. It was during a time of my seven years of Civil Service work here in Tulsa, while doing Engr. drafting for the Corps of Engineers, War Department. At this time I began to the matter serious thought. for a number of intermittent nights at about the same time, I would hear a terrific very quick noise over the four unit apartment Bldg. at 44 East 17th St. where I had a small roomed apartment on the top floor. The noise only lasted a second or less, and always traveled north & south. It was at great speed this missed or whatever over head that I could never get to the window & look into the night sky. I reported it to the 7:0.9. here (local 7.B.9.) & checked all the airports. no one knew of any craft having been there at that time. I clocked it after hearing it 4 or 5 times, and as near as I can remember now it was about 11:21 P:M. Then the time I again reported to the 7.D.9. I had long before found it was not street nor building noise. The second time I called the 7:D.9. the party at the other end, said wait a moment; soon he said, a Lt. of the force had been telling him of hearing the same thing a few blocks south of me at the 21st bridge while out there on patrol duty! Then a few weeks after those noises over land, came the first word of people, seeing "flying saucers" Since living here at 1039 M. College, late last fall a flying saucer must have been what I saw that looked like a very round while cloud against a grey stormy sky (event year over cast sky). It also rapidly drifted north & south, and while I wondered I looked at the (cloud?) sphere I saw it disintegrate and something that looked like envelopes or paper fell toward the earth but the round objects pieces seemed & melt into the grey sky.
