FBI file 62-HQ-83894, section 5

Department of War · 209 pages · text by OCR

This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying disks from 1949 and 1950. Most of it concerns a letter to Walter Winchell, passed on by Ernest Cuneo, from Peter Camerlon Jones, who said he saw a top-shaped silver object in the mountains near Los Angeles in August 1947. Los Angeles agents could not find Jones, and Hoover suggested the letter might be a prank. The file also holds a Navy intelligence report on 6 or 7 discs seen over southern Oregon on 27 May 1949, plus letters from members of the public about Chicago and Toronto.

Subject: Unidentified Flying Objects - Report 07.

observed the objects. This position could possibly be as much as five miles SSW of the position given. Source's location when objects left his visual range was $ 4 2^{\circ} 4 1^{\prime} \mathrm{N}, 1 1 9^{\circ} 4 9^{\prime} \mathrm{W} $ . Source flow in a straight line between these coordinates.

location of objects when first observed; $ 4 2^{\circ} 3 8^{\prime} \mathrm{N}, 1 1 9^{\circ} 4 3^{\prime} \mathrm{N}。 $ location of objects when last counts $ 4 2^{\circ} 2 8^{\prime} \mathrm{N}, 1 1 9^{\circ} 4 8^{\prime} \mathrm{N}。 $ The objects made a slight change of course from quartering to parallelling source's straight line of flight.

REPORTING OFFICER'S COMMENT: It is believed that conventional aircraft, balloons, astronomical phenomena, and auto-hypnosis can be eliminated as an explanation for the objects sighted by sources. Since source was not flying into the sun and since he is an export pilot-instructor, VENTZOO does not appear to be a reasonable explanation nor do reflections on, or irregularities of, the plentiful glass canopy through which source viewed the objects offer a reasonable explanation, because of the wide range of observations of the objects. As far as the reporting officer's comment is concerned (as well as source's own comment) the explanation of source's sighting of the strange flying objects remains a question mark.
