FBI file 62-HQ-83894, section 5

Department of War · 209 pages · text by OCR

This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying disks from 1949 and 1950. Most of it concerns a letter to Walter Winchell, passed on by Ernest Cuneo, from Peter Camerlon Jones, who said he saw a top-shaped silver object in the mountains near Los Angeles in August 1947. Los Angeles agents could not find Jones, and Hoover suggested the letter might be a prank. The file also holds a Navy intelligence report on 6 or 7 discs seen over southern Oregon on 27 May 1949, plus letters from members of the public about Chicago and Toronto.

SUBJECT: FLYING SAUCERS

I took a call from Ernest Cuneo by reference from your office. He referred to his call of last Saturday relative to a letter Mr. Winchell received from a man in Los Angeles concerning flying saucers. He stated that Winchell wanted to do a column on this letter if the Bureau had no objection.

I told him that whatever he did with reference to writing the story concerning this letter was entirely up to him and would in no way affect anything the Bureau was doing. I suggested that he might desire to check with the Air Corps inasmuch as the handling of flying saucers was a matter of primary interest to them. He stated, "To hell with the Air Force. He just didn't want to release the information if it would affect the Bureau".
