This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 collects Bureau correspondence on flying disks from 1949 and 1950. Most of it concerns a letter to Walter Winchell, passed on by Ernest Cuneo, from Peter Camerlon Jones, who said he saw a top-shaped silver object in the mountains near Los Angeles in August 1947. Los Angeles agents could not find Jones, and Hoover suggested the letter might be a prank. The file also holds a Navy intelligence report on 6 or 7 discs seen over southern Oregon on 27 May 1949, plus letters from members of the public about Chicago and Toronto.

THE INSPECTOR GENERAL USAF 17TH DISTRICT OFFICE OF SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, NEW MEXICO File No: 24-0-0 Reid from O.S.I. 7-14 050 ESS cjo 5 July 1950 SUBJECT: UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECT sighted on 29 June 1950 at Phoenix, Arizona SPECIAL INQUIRY TO: Director of Special Investigations Headquarters, United States Air Force Washington 25, D. C. Keay Henrich 1. Reference is made to Spot Report TWX from this Headquarters dated 30 June 1950, making reference to an undenified flying object sighted on 29 June 1950 at Phoenix, Arizona. 2. An interview with 1st Lt. JOHN D. FINK, A0-823052, 93rd Fighter Squadron, Kirtland AFB reveals that on 29 June 1950 at approximately 18h0 hours Lt. FINK sighted this object. Lt. FINK climbed to 47,000 while flying an F-86 aircraft and observed that the object was a bright balloon with instruments attached and was floating at an altitude of 50,000 feet. 3. Lt. FINK described the speed of the balloon as being very slow and further described the balloon as being an "inverted tear drop". 4. Inasmuch as the previously unidentified object has been positively identified as a balloon, further investigation will not be conducted in this incident. RICHARD G.
