This is section 1 of FBI headquarters file 62-HQ-83894 on flying discs, compiled in July and August 1947. It collects press clippings, including a report of a disc found by a priest in Grafton, Wisconsin, that a Milwaukee memo treats as a prank involving a circular saw. It also holds a Milwaukee report on a disc found near Black River Falls, a Portland teletype about a pilot's sighting over Myrtle Creek, Oregon, citizen letters, and Hoover's correspondence forwarding material to the War Department.

Series 1947, dated July 30, 1947, Section (B), which ad.vises that a.11 reports concerning flying discs should be investigated by field offices. Prior to the receipt of these instructions, two iastances were called to the attention of this office concerning flying discs. One report was received July 7, 1947, the details of which are set forth in Milwaukee letter to the Bureau dated July 8, 1947, entitled, 11l'l;ying Discs or Saucers, Misce'l.laneous, Telephone Call from Mr. J'l.etcher at the lNree.u at 8:30 a.m., 7-7-47." No investigation was conducted concerning this report. The second rtport was receiTed by this office at 1:20 p.m. July 11, 1947, from Lieutenant Colonel HARRY w. SCHAEB"J'.1, who is 1n charge of the CiVil Air Patrol of Wisconsin, an awd.liary of the Army Air Forces. On that occasion Colonel SCHAEFER, calling from Black B.iver Falls, Wisconsin~ telephonicall.y advised this office that an object in the shape of a di , c, nineteen inches in diameter had been found July' 10, 1947, by one SIG' RANSON, city- electrician on the Jackson Oounty f'a.irgrounds, near m.a.ck B.i er Falls, Wisoonsin, about 3:30 p.m. The disc might be made of a substance SlX:h as cardboard covered by a silver airplane dope material. The contraption bas a small wooden tail like a rudder in the 'back and inside of the disc is what appears to be an ROA photo-eleotric cell or tu.be. Also inside the disc is a. little electric motor with a shaft running to the cent er of the disc. At one end of the shaft is a very small propeller. In Colonel SCHAEF!lt's opinion that contraption might possibly have been made by some juvenile. Oolonel SCHAEl'm stated that he desired to return the contraption to Milwaukee and eventually turn it over to the Army Air Jorces, but that the finder, SIG HANSOlf, apparently wanted to get some publicity on bis find. and wanted it returned to him. Thia information was telt!)hOnically- ca.J.led. to the attention of Assistant Director D. M. LADD of the :Bureau on July 11, 1947. Subsequmtly, SAC H. X.
