This is section 1 of FBI headquarters file 62-HQ-83894 on flying discs, compiled in July and August 1947. It collects press clippings, including a report of a disc found by a priest in Grafton, Wisconsin, that a Milwaukee memo treats as a prank involving a circular saw. It also holds a Milwaukee report on a disc found near Black River Falls, a Portland teletype about a pilot's sighting over Myrtle Creek, Oregon, citizen letters, and Hoover's correspondence forwarding material to the War Department.

FLYING OBJECTS IN AIR
Mrs. GWYNNE M. MERCHANT ha·s come to the resident agency at Santa Fe,
New Mexico on several occasions to report that she has received information
concerning flying obj ects passing through the air. Some of the reports that she
has received concern light objects seen at night vmich have allegedly been follow
ed by explosions . She advised that one of s.uch objects was reported by FRANK
....,. BURTRAM, Forest Ranger, who works near Canj ilon, New Mexico. She claims that
others were seen near Park View and Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico.
Mrs . MERCHANT called attention to clippings from various newspapers
concern.ing 11 disc-like11 objects seen in New Mexico and other parts of the country.
Mrs. MERCHANT claims to be a student of radio waves and r.zy forms, and
contends that the above mentioned objects mey be missiles similar to those appear
ing over Sweden some time ago.
Mrs. MERCHANT has discussed the above with officials of the Atomic
Energy Comnission, and has written the Secretary of War and other government
officials concerning her theories. Mr. SIDNEY NEWBURGER, Chief of Security and
1Intelligence for the A.E.C.,has advised that officials at Los Alamos consider Mrs.
MERCHANT unreliable and possibly not well balanced mentally. She has mentioneato
agents of this office that she was struck by lightning when a child.
On July 15, Mrs. l!ERCHANT came to the Santa Fe resident agency and
advised that she had written to WALTER WINCHEIL, promising him a story in connection
with the "flying discs."
The foregoing infonnation is being submitted to the Bureau, inasmuch as
rs. MERCHANT has written to several government officials and Mr. WINCHELL.
