This is section 1 of FBI headquarters file 62-HQ-83894 on flying discs, compiled in July and August 1947. It collects press clippings, including a report of a disc found by a priest in Grafton, Wisconsin, that a Milwaukee memo treats as a prank involving a circular saw. It also holds a Milwaukee report on a disc found near Black River Falls, a Portland teletype about a pilot's sighting over Myrtle Creek, Oregon, citizen letters, and Hoover's correspondence forwarding material to the War Department.

Reynolds discussed the above captioned matter with him on July 9, 1947. General Schulgen indicated to Mr. R~ynolds that the Air Corps taken the at t itude that every effort mus t be undertaken in order to run down and ascertain whether or not the fiying disks are a fact and, if so, to learn l~about them. According to General Schulgen, the Air Corps Intelligence a.re lizing all of their scientists in order t o ascertal~ whether or not such a nom,non could in fact occur. He stated that this re search is being conducted ~e thought th.at the flying objects might be a celestial phenomenon and with view that they might be a foreign body mechanically devised and controlled. General Schul.gen also indicated to Mr. Reynolds that all Air Corps allations have been alerted to run out ea.ch reported sighting to obtain all ible data to aaaist in this research project. Re pointed out that the thoU&ht exists that the first reported. sightings might have been by individUAls of Communist sympathies with the view to , causing hysteria and fear of a secret Russian weapon. Gener~l Solmlgen indicated to Mr. Reynolds t hat he is desirous of having all the angles covered in this matter. He stated that reports of hit sc ientists and findings of the various Air Corps installations will be available in his office. Xe advised that to complete the picture he desired the assistance ijof the Federal Bureau of Inveatigation in locating and ques tioning the individual• who first sighted the so- called fiying disks in order t o ascertain whether or not they are sincere in their statements ths.t they saw thes e disks. or whether their statements were prompted by pere, nal desire for publici t;v- or political reason•.
