This FBI file section, serial 448 onward of 62-HQ-83894, gathers UFO correspondence from 1966 to 1977. It includes J. Edgar Hoover's reply to Florence C. Dow of Goffstown, New Hampshire, who had asked whether the Amalgamated Flying Saucer Clubs of America was backed by communists. Her enclosed July 1966 issue of the AFSCA journal is also in the file. Later items are a 1977 Air Force UFO fact sheet on the end of Project Blue Book and a White House inquiry, to which the FBI replied that it has no jurisdiction over UFO sightings.

It had been a big year for Unidentified Flying Objects. The sightings had c om e in bun Che S, the bulk of them , last spring and' summer . And 1 the reports had come from all over. "Like Neon Lamps" Among the most intriguing items in thi~ year's crop: I) At Milan, l\Iichiaan 15 mi I es south or Ann°Arbor, bluish - yellow bars of light we r e spotted, looking '·like neon lamps dangling in the sky." o In East Delhi, Mich., a 15-year-old boy called in to r e p o r t seeing lights in the sky alternately standing still and m o vi n g, sometimes flashing on and off. ~ In Altadena an d San Marino, Calif., police switch boards logged dozens of calls after a pair of red lights in the sky were reported by residents. • o In Toledo, Ohio, officials at the local airport received seven calls from persons who said they saw a glowing ob ject that was r ed, green and white. • In snburban . Detroit, . a man saw a noiseless, wing less, cigar-shaped flying ob ject. o In Br y an, Texas, resi ' d en ts said they heard a star-like object purr. o Ov er Valdese, N.C., a "glowing blue thing" explod , ed, then lit up the town like a ' _giant flashbulb. Sometimes the a 11 e g e d , sightings spilled over into 1 the bizarre. A space ship full : of little men allegedly landed in a farm yard near Hopkins yilJe, Kentucky. The l it t 1 e , men glowed, and they were • described as "three feet taJl, , with eyes like saucers and 1 hands like claws." A grain buyer in Nebraska said he was invited into a , space ship where he chatted , with four men and two wom en. They spoke only broken · English-but fluent High ' German which, as -it hap pened, was the grain buyer's native tongue. SihJrY Cigar Nor did America have any corner on the UFO market. In Northern Ireland, Tom H u t c h i n s o n saw a saucer drop into a peat bog near his home in 1\loneymore. It was eggshaped, th;:ee feet in di- ,I DR. CONDON Saucer-watcher ameter, 18 inches high. It be gan to spin and Hutchinson • grabbed it. He was carrying it to the po 1i c e, who de scribed him as ''level-headed and God-fearing," when the thing twisted out of his hands and got away. And in Warminster, Eng land, a city council worker said he saw a silvery cigar shape drifting over the vil lage downs. After a time, be said, it see m e d to stretch. Then it s e e m e d to divide amidships with a flash of or ange light, a 1t h o ugh there was no noise. Flaming·Object Not all the sightings could be easily written off as the phantasmagoria of kooks, cranks aud d:rnnks. And, un less one subscribed to a theo ry of mass hallucination, it was difficult to explain away simultaneous sightings co n fi.nned by many r ational wit nesses - such as the flaming obj e ct that was seen last April by thousands of E ast Coast residents from Wash i n g t o n to Boston and even tempor~rily disrupted a ball g am e between the Chicago White Sox and the Wash ington Sen at ors in Wash- ington, D. C. - Or the i n c i d e n t in Hills- dale, Michigan lastr.~iarch. in-. which a Civil Defense Direc tor, an assistant dean, and 87 coeds r eported that they had seen a g lo w i n g object zip past their college do;:mitory and hover in a swamp for hours. Witnesses said they w at ch e d from the second floor of the Hillsdale College girls dormitory as the object w ob b 1 e d, wa\"ered, glowed eerily and once zipped right at a dormitory window be fore st9pping suddenly.
