Department of War · 184 pages · text from the file's own layer

This FBI file section, serial 448 onward of 62-HQ-83894, gathers UFO correspondence from 1966 to 1977. It includes J. Edgar Hoover's reply to Florence C. Dow of Goffstown, New Hampshire, who had asked whether the Amalgamated Flying Saucer Clubs of America was backed by communists. Her enclosed July 1966 issue of the AFSCA journal is also in the file. Later items are a 1977 Air Force UFO fact sheet on the end of Project Blue Book and a White House inquiry, to which the FBI replied that it has no jurisdiction over UFO sightings.

SUBJECT: WHITE HOUSE INQUIRY RE
~IDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS (UFO)
Stanley Schneider of the Office of Science and
Tedhnology, White House , telephonically contacted me today to
inquire as to the Bureau ' s procedure for handling information
received from the public or otherwise, relating to sightings
of UFOs. He advised that Jody Powell of the President ' s sta ff
has raised the question as to whether or not there is any
coordination within the Executive Branch relating to information
concerning this subject . He stated that the U. S . Air Force had
closed their investigation of these matters several years ago
and currently does nothing but refer such information to
appropriate local authorities .
I advised him that as far as the FBI is concerned
there appears to be no conceivable jurisdiction for us to oono,μct
any inquiries upon receipt of information relating to a UFO
sighting and , in the absence of some investigative jurisdiction
based upon the information furnished , that information would be
referred to the Department of the Air Force without any action
being taken by the Bureau.
He thanked me for the information and stated that if
any further contact was necessary he would call back .
