This section of FBI file 62-HQ-83894 on flying discs collects 1947 FBI memoranda, teletypes and Army Air Forces intelligence papers. It includes F. M. Johnson's report of discs near Mt. Adams on June 24, 1947, the Maury Island claims of Harold Dahl and Fred Crisman, the fatal B-25 crash at Kelso, Washington that killed investigators Davidson and Brown, MIT findings that New Hampshire fragments were ordinary cast iron, and A. C. Urie's Twin Falls sighting. It ends with the Bureau discontinuing its disc investigations.

Nease on the above-captioned matter, dated September 3., 1947. The reference ~::~: ~::• memorandum indicates that the instrument has been examined by the Ia.boratoi,~r~~H--c±-..,... and the laboratory had contacted a. Mrs. Whedon of the A.rrrry- Engineers and she If I) k indicated that the instrument had been used by the air Forces on tests which /~~~ were classified as "Top Secret." Z-,>-' The memorandum indicates that Special Agents. w. Heynolds of the Liaison Section contacted the Intelligence Division of the Air Forces and was advised that Mrs. 'Whedon alluded that the instrument was used in "Operation Mogul." The instru ment was loaned to the Intelligence Division of the Air Forces who in turn forwarded it to Wright Field. The report was received from Wright Field indicating the insti·ument had no connection wi~peration Mogul " or any other operation at Wright Field. It was classified as a ho'b: in view of the a pparent .discrepancy between information developed from Mrs . Whedon and ~nfonnation received from Intelligence Division of the Air Forces that t he Bureau might wish to pursue thi s matt er f urther. Mr . Zinnners of the Technical !Aboratory advised Mr . Reynolds of the Liaison Section that Mrs. Whedon had told him that a Major Hopkins handled the Liaison in \'jlshington for the tests in which this instrument was used. Id.eutenant Colonel George Ge.rrett of the Intelligence Division of the Air Forces advised Special Agent Reynolds that he contacted Major Hopkins. He advised t ha t Major Hopkins has had a great deal of experience in radio and a l ong technical lines. Major Hopkins advised Colonel Garrett that the instrument could not have been used in the "Operation Mogul. " Hopkins indicated that from the pictures and particles r ecovered., it a ppeared to hi m t o be a part or portions of an old- type radio loud speaker. / In view of the informati on received from Major Hopkins, Colonel Ge.:rr~ ' stated that he was at a loss as to how to explain the actions of Mrs . Whedon other than to say that she per haps gave a false impression as to her knowledge of the 1'\ instrument and the "Operation Mogul. " Garrett pointed out that in view of the r eport received from Wright Field., together with the statement made by Ma j or Hopkins., he felt that there was sufficient evidence that this instrument was not used in any ' Wat Bep~r-tmte~t classifi ed project and that in all probability it was j ust a hoax. flu~ Fo.-ce..
