The article went on to state that it was believed at the time that there was
some correlation between the flying disc and the kurray Island explosion, and
that RAYl'OND PAU:'.ER, Chicago magazine editor, had employed APJfOLD to investi
gate and 11 cover 11 the 1!urray Island explosion.
The articl e went on to state that on August 1, 1947 , at Tacoma, Washington,
there was a conference among officials of the Army and Navy, who discussed
the possible relation between the i;urray Island explosion and the appearance
of flying discs . ARNOLD was supposed to have been in attendance at this
conference . At the conference, authorities br ought samples of a lava oxide
metal, allegedly taken from the scene of the ~urray Island expl osion.
'lhe article stated that following the conference, two pilots left by plane
for Hamilton F'ield, California , carr ying samples of the lava oxide metal .
The article further reported that the plane crashed near Hamilton Field,
California, and it w·as conjectured that the plane had exploded by reason of
the combustion of the lava oxide metal it carried.
From the above ne,vspaper article, it should be noted that RAYLOND PAIJ.lER.,
SHAVEF 1s employer, was from the start 11 exploiting11 the appearance of the
flying dis cs , possibly to enhance the appeal of SHA.VER 's stories . It is
possible , therefore, that the entire flying disc theory was conceived by
PAI.MER and SHAVE't .
