Defense Intelligence Reference Document Laser Lightcraft Nanosatellites

Defense Intelligence Agency · 77 pages · text from the file's own layer

This Defense Intelligence Reference Document from the Defense Intelligence Agency, dated 1 November 2010, was produced under the Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications (AAWSA) Program. It describes nanosatellite technologies and proposes launching nanosats into orbit with laser Lightcraft propulsion. It also covers a weapon mission selection study and multi-megawatt laser options. The author recommends that the Department of Defense and NASA bring Lightcraft R&D back to the United States and restart the X-50LR flight demonstration program.

+ Total mass flow rate, Qtota1 = 240 kg/sec [for a total (run time) mass of
72 metric tons].
• Plenum Chamber
• Volume, V = 0.5 m x 3.0 m x 1.5 m = 2.25 m 3 .
• Static pressure, P = 2.02 x 105 Pa (or 2 atmospheres).
• Sonic orifice plate perforation= 17.5%.
• Flow screen loss> 0.2 to 0.3.
• Skin friction loss~ 0.08.
• Gas Storage Tank
• Run time = 300 seconds & 4 to 5 runs.
• Pressure, P = 2.066 x 107 Pa (or 200 atmospheres).
• Volume, V = 68 m 3 x 4.
• Acoustics Suppression
• Pumping induced medium homogeneity, L',.P/P = 0.94@ Ep = 300 J/1.
• Acoustic suppression
+ Flow direction: expansion horn provides impedance match eliminating
reflection of pressure waves.
• Normal to flow direction: using acoustics muffler to dump out
transverse pressure waves.
• Muffler requirements: attenuation factor< 0.55; number of bounces
between pulses n = 8.
