This material from the Haines papers at the American Heritage Center contains US Air Force Office of Special Investigations reports from November 1949. They cover a special inquiry into unconventional aircraft. An Eastern Air Lines captain was interviewed in Atlanta on 6 October 1949. He described a wingless, cigar-shaped object with two rows of lighted windows and a red flame, seen at 0340 on 23 July 1948 southwest of Montgomery, Alabama. A follow-up report closed the inquiry.

Propulsion appeared to be result of jet power. Control Excellent - well coordinated gentle climbing turn into clouds prior to disappearance it least 500 miles per hour. Manner of disappearance Disappeared into cloud bank to rear of observer, after slight climbing turn. (At 5000) Viability - Excellent, with 25 mile range.
